Pope Appoints Nun to Head Vatican Department, a First for a Woman

On Monday, Pope Francis appointed Sister Simona Brambilla as the head of the Vatican office overseeing religious orders, making her the first woman to hold a top position in the Holy See. This decision reflects the Pope’s goal to give women more leadership roles in the Catholic Church. Sister Brambilla is the first woman to lead a department in the Roman Curia. However, she was appointed alongside Cardinal Angel Fernandez Artime as co-leader, which some critics feel may reduce her authority.
