Sharks Have Ears on the Ocean: Study Finds They Can Hear Sounds From 243 Feet Away and Pinpoint Their Source

New research shows free-swimming blacktip sharks can detect underwater low-frequency sounds from nearly 74 meters and pinpoint their direction. Field experiments off Palm Beach County, Florida, used an underwater speaker and drone tracking to test 100 to 800 Hz tones. Sharks turned away from distant sounds, indicating directional hearing and sensitivity to lower frequencies in natural coastal waters.
