India repeats its 718 snow leopard estimate, but Himachal’s newer survey counts 83 🐆❄️

India reiterated a national estimate of 718 snow leopards, based on the SPAI survey conducted from 2019 to 2023 and released in January 2024, with Ladakh accounting for 477. Himachal Pradesh later published a higher state estimate of 83 in October 2025. The environment ministry launched SPAI 2.0 in 2025 to strengthen monitoring, habitat protection and community engagement.
