Researchers turned spent malt rootlets from brewing into biochar that, when added to sand filters, removed about five times more Escherichia coli than sand alone. The team plans real-world tests and compared similar wastes from olive oil and coffee. This biochar could aid groundwater remediation and sustainable reuse of brewery by-products, though its reusability remains uncertain.
