BJP youth wing workers in Pune erected banners reading 'Be a Machchhar, not a Cockroach', featuring pilot Captain Smit Machchhar, and the images went viral. Social media reactions were divided between praise for the wordplay and criticism of politicising the pilot’s heroism. The controversy coincides with Cockroach Janta Party plans to protest at Jantar Mantar on October 10.
