Gardens, balconies and potted plants can shelter snakes that blend into soil and foliage. Five species, including the flowerpot snake, checkered keelback, common wolf snake, green vine snake and Indian rat snake, are often found near homes. Most are harmless, though a few are mildly venomous. Avoid handling snakes, wear gloves when repotting, and call trained rescuers.
