Taiwan's President Lai Ching-te said Taiwan cherishes peace but will not surrender its freedom, insisting its people’s right to exist must be respected. He defended increased defence spending as deterrence, not provocation, amid rising pressure and military threats from China, and appealed to democracies and the US to help preserve peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific.
