Indian Railways is prioritising a proposed 34-km Rangpo-Gangtok railway link estimated to cost around ₹9,000 crore, bringing Sikkim’s capital closer to the national rail network. The extension would follow the Sivok-Rangpo project, which is targeted for completion by December 2027. The proposed line could improve passenger access, tourism and goods movement while giving Gangtok its first direct railway connection.
