Scientists finally see how nature moves energy so efficiently

Researchers from PNNL, SLAC and partner universities used ultrafast X-ray spectroscopy, X-ray scattering and advanced simulations to capture, with structural sensitivity, coordinated proton-coupled electron transfer and simultaneous solvent reorganization in a light-driven reaction. The results reveal how local electronic changes and water-network shifts occur together, informing design of more efficient catalysts, fuel cells and flow batteries.
