SC panel asked to consider rehabilitation of nine Assam elephants held in Tamil Nadu

The Gauhati High Court asked a Supreme Court-appointed High-Powered Committee to consider rehabilitating nine elephants allegedly kept illegally in Tamil Nadu after being leased from Assam. It ordered Tamil Nadu authorities to inspect the facilities monthly and to seize and rehabilitate malnourished or neglected elephants pending the HPC decision. The case follows viral footage of alleged torture and petitions by PETA India and veterinarians.
