Packaged Drinking Water Classified as ‘High-Risk Food’ in India

India has classified packaged drinking and mineral water as "high-risk food," requiring stricter safety checks. The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) announced the change after removing the need for Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) certification. Manufacturers must now undergo mandatory inspections and third-party safety audits before receiving licences or registrations. Central licence holders will also face annual inspections to ensure quality. This move aims to enhance consumer protection and strengthen safety standards in the packaged water industry.
