Not A Trophy, But A Flower! Peru Names A Newly Discovered Endangered Plant After Messi

Researchers have described Salvia messii, a 1.5-metre aromatic shrub from the central and southern Peruvian Andes, named in honour of Lionel Messi for its white and light-blue flowers. Found at 2,000 to 2,400 m in six sites across Lima and Ica regions, it is assessed as Endangered due to restricted distribution and threats from fires, road construction and drought.
