Scientists formally described Victoria colombiana, a new giant waterlily species discovered in Colombia’s upper Orinoco watershed after a botanist spotted it in an Instagram photo. Indigenous guides helped locate a flowering specimen needed for naming; researchers estimate only 30 to 50 wild plants remain. The team plans IUCN listing and ex situ cultivation to aid conservation.
