When elephants get sick, they may know exactly where to look for help. A new study on Kenya’s Mount Elgon elephants found evidence suggesting they use 35 different plant species for medicinal purposes, with 25 known locally to have medicinal uses. Researchers also documented accounts of mothers giving medicinal plant material to calves, while scientists now investigate whether these plants could lead to new medicines.
