A global analysis shows ecosystem benefits usually increase as biodiversity rises, contradicting the idea of broad functional redundancy. Using 423 studies with over 222,000 data points across land, freshwater and marine systems, researchers found services like water quality, pollination and ocean carbon storage often improve with more species, implying species loss can weaken essential services.
