Gautam Apte and volunteers used thermal-imaging monoculars and brief flashlight flashes to detect and photograph nocturnally migrating birds along Lake Erie and Cape May. Their method revealed many silent night migrants and unexpected species moving at night, improving identification beyond radar and aiding conservation while minimizing disturbance. The work continues as a tribute to Tom Johnson.
