In 2025 the Mekong countries, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam, lost 746,168 hectares of tree cover, including over 154,000 hectares of primary forest and nearly 200,000 hectares within protected areas. Regional deforestation fell about 25% from 2024, possibly due to fewer fires, higher rainfall, stronger enforcement and commodity market shifts, yet persistent drivers and weak protection continue to threaten remaining forests.
