Researchers analysed DNA extracted from medieval parchment made of sheep, goat and cattle skin, finding traces of the deadly sheeppox virus in famous European manuscripts. Combining these data with older samples, they traced livestock infection back over 3,700 years and observed genomic stability over millennia. Findings show archives can preserve animal pathogen DNA, improving understanding of pathogen evolution and past disease impacts.
