Japan will launch the first mission to return samples from Phobos, Mars's small moon, using the MMX spacecraft atop an H3 rocket. The five-year mission aims to study Phobos' origin and composition, support future crewed Mars plans, deploy a French-German rover, carry NASA and ESA instruments, and return at least ten grams of soil by 2031.
