Japan’s Shikoku Pilgrimage takes travellers on a roughly 750-mile circuit linking 88 Buddhist temples associated with monk Kukai, but there is no single way to complete it. The journey can take around six weeks on foot, while others use cars, buses or bicycles, or tackle sections over time. More than 100,000 people hike parts of the route each year.
