Theyyam, a living ritual tradition from northern Kerala, features performers who, after spiritual preparation, embody deities through elaborate costumes, music and fire-centered dances. Rooted in local myth and practiced mainly in Kannur and Kasaragod, over 400 varieties exist, connecting communities, challenging social hierarchies, and inviting respectful witnessing during the ritual season from October to May.
