The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has advised social media platforms to prioritise complaints from authorised government agencies, enhance monitoring, escalation and grievance systems, and promptly address misleading, manipulated or out-of-context content that could threaten public order. Platforms must label AI-generated or altered media and cooperate with law enforcement under existing IT Rules; the advisory is effective immediately.
