Our study of over 60,000 fossil pollen and spores across regions shows that two extremely warm greenhouse intervals in the last 140 million years drove widespread plant turnover, fostering new species while causing extinctions across latitudes and plant groups. Modern human-driven warming is much faster, likely leading to rapid losses unless carbon emissions are curtailed.
