Gwalior’s Scindia Dynasty Took on Caste Discrimination Before Independence

In 1945 Maharaja Jiwajirao Scindia issued an order granting Dalits equal access to public wells, schools, state-managed temples, and freedom in dress, transport and marriage customs, with penalties for obstruction. The princely state also expanded tribal education with schools, hostels and vocational training. The proclamation and related measures predated India’s 1947 independence.
