Eight MLAs of Meghalaya’s United Democratic Party have joined the BJP, raising the party’s strength in the 60-member Assembly from two to 10. The move leaves the UDP with four MLAs and makes the BJP the second-largest party in the House. The legislators cited issues including Khasi and Garo language recognition, coal-mining procedures and amendments to state security laws.
