Two recent laboratory studies show bleached corals can rapidly regain symbiotic algae and recover when placed in brief physical contact with healthy corals of the same genetic background, or when inoculated with heat-tolerant algae. Experiments observed symbiont transfer within days and full recovery in weeks, suggesting a potential intervention pathway to aid reefs damaged by mass bleaching.
