Communities across Manchester and the North West have begun nine-day Navratri celebrations honoring the goddess Durga. Running until 20 October, the festival commemorates her battle with the demon Mahishasura and features dancing, light, food, and gift-giving. Oldham will host free events throughout the period, described by Indian Association member Bharat Kumar Sisodia as the major festival of the year.
