In 1935 Australia released 2,400 cane toads in Queensland to control beetles, but the species multiplied to an estimated 200 million and spread across northern and eastern Australia. The toxic, adaptable toads have become a major ecological disaster, threatening at least 75 native species, disrupting ecosystems and posing risks to wildlife, pets and human health.
