From January 1, 2027, India will require messaging apps like WhatsApp, Telegram, Signal and Snapchat to maintain continuous SIM binding to the active SIM tied to the registered number. The DoT’s directive, effective after a December 31, 2026 compliance deadline, mandates apps ensure the SIM is present in-device, limiting use on SIM-less devices to curb fraud and improve traceability.
